The Rules of our Game
My dear friend,
Every perfect plan requires a touch of elegance, a dash of daring, and—most importantly—clear rules. Before you join me in crafting our little masterpiece, take note of the following:
- Respect the Scene. All clues are placed outside of our partner businesses. You may look closely—even feel around if curiosity strikes—but do so with discretion and care. The cleverest conspirators leave no mess behind. Take nothing that does not belong to you.
- Mind Your Step. Even the boldest scheme must obey the law of the land. Please respect all traffic rules and cross only at crosswalks. A perfect plan does not end with a lecture from a constable.
- Our Innocent Friends. The businesses along our path are uninvolved in our plotting. Do patronize them if you wish, but remember—our game does not interfere with their work. On rare occasions, you may receive a secret code directly from me. If I whisper of such a thing, you have my permission to act accordingly. Otherwise, the businesses are innocent bystanders.
- Before The Clock Strikes 10. Finish your work before the clock strikes ten. After all, nothing good happens after 10 p.m.… and I should hate for our perfect plan to unravel in the dark.
Follow these rules, and together we may just design the perfect crime. But remember: the question isn’t whether we can plan it… it’s whether we can get away with it.
Yours most sincerely,
T.W.
What is the Dial M Mystery Trail?
Ah, you’ve caught me. It’s a little game of wit and daring, scattered across downtown Paducah. You’ll follow my voice, puzzle by puzzle, until we’ve sketched out a rather perfect plan.
How long will it take?
That depends on how clever you are, my friend. Most finish in about 45 to 60 minutes — but haste makes mistakes, and mistakes… well, they ruin everything.
Do I need anything besides my phone?
Only your phone, sharp eyes, and a touch of daring. Leave the magnifying glass to the detectives.
Is this appropriate for children?
Quite. It is designed as a family-friendly puzzle adventure. I recommend it for ages 12 and up — young enough to be curious, old enough to be sly.
I entered a code and there was a long pause. Is that normal?
Of course. Do you think I answer without double-checking? Sometimes I consult the ledger or review the alibi before speaking again. Stay on the line — I haven’t forgotten you.
Does it cost anything?
Not a penny for the game itself. Your phone carrier may charge for calls or messages, but that’s between you and them. My part is free.
Do I need to go inside businesses?
No, no — we mustn’t arouse suspicion. All the evidence you need is outside, in windows or public spaces. You may browse the shops if you like, but that’s your cover story, not part of my plan.
What about secret codes at certain businesses?
Ah, you’ve heard whispers, have you? On rare occasions I may share a code that lets you unlock something extra at one of our downtown stops. If I give you such a code, you may use it. Otherwise, keep your hands to yourself — the businesses are innocent bystanders in our little plot.
When can I play?
The trail is yours to follow during daylight and evening hours. But remember — finish before 10:00 p.m. Nothing good happens after ten, and I refuse to be caught after curfew.
Is this real?
My dear, of course not. It’s a story, a game, a bit of theatre spilled into the streets. Market House Theatre invented the whole thing — every clue, every whisper, every pause. But isn’t it more fun to pretend?
