Composition VII
by Deidre Adams, 2008
39″ x 39″
From the Collection of the National Quilt Museum
Artist Statement
In this series, I explore ideas of time and transformation, inspired by the structural elements and seductive surfaces of old buildings and walls. An old wall tells a story, like a canvas upon which both nature and human beings play and leave their marks. Over the course of many years, layers of paint and graffiti are applied, only to be eroded by sun, rain, and wind. The result is a surface rich with texture and color.
Freedom's Cascade
by Erika Carter, 1990
44″ x 66″
From the Collection of the National Quilt Museum
Artist Statement
Freedom’s Cascade was inspired by the fall of the Berlin Wall. The angular branches against the neutral background are reminiscent of the struggle for change, while the confetti- like flowers express the joy felt when the change was accomplished.
Things Fall Apart
by Eleanor McCain, 2018
64″ x 126″
From the Collection of the National Quilt Museum
Artist Statement
The need to create is an integral part of the human condition, manifesting itself differently from individual to individual, but necessary for a fully realized existence. We wish to produce something where before there was nothing. Creativity is not product but action, the exploration of ‘making’ as a search for beauty and perfection. Creativity is also spirituality, a search for meaning and insight into ourselves and our place in the universe. And not least, creativity is problem solving, an exercise of the intellect to find new solutions and new ways of seeing.
Come Color with Me
by Dianne Hire, 1993
79″ x 95″
From the Collection of the National Quilt Museum
Artist Statement
This quilt is a twist on the Friendship Quilt—of the 132 4” blocks, the colors for 55 were selected by 55 friends, who without seeing the design, were invited to ‘come color with me!’ The youngest was 3 years old; two are color-blind; two extreme extroverts picked the same bright yellows and oranges; and two photographers took the longest time to select their colors.
Submergence
by Erika Carter, 1989
71″ x 53″
From the Collection of the National Quilt Museum
Artist Statement
Submergence is one of my water quilts, suggesting through color the attractiveness of ocean, the desire to explore its mystery. Though the water’s surface seems just within hand’s reach, the depths hold our attention. However, not being a swimmer, I’ve experience being caught underwater and needing to be fished out. The water’s surface was bright with sunlight, but, to me, unattainable. Yet when I look at Submergence I can imagine being surrounded by water and unafraid.
